PEMO launches lakeshore beautification contest

Banking on the success of its cleanliness drive in Lake Sebu and to further raise it to the next level, a Lakeshore Beautification Contest will be launched by the Provincial Environment Management Office (PEMO) this year.

PEMO Forest and Inland Water chief Forester Mary Jane Manlisis disclosed that the contest is open for the municipality of Lake Sebu only, particularly in the communities identified within the cluster area by PEMO.

“The cluster areas are Pag-asa to Estares, Arellano to Fishport, Lambanig-Lamnabol-Tabite, Lamsufo to 3 Fingers, Isla Grande-T’benwo-Islets, Bacdulong and Outlet-San Miguel to Talisay,” Forester Manlisis added.

Evaluators of this contest were chosen fom the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, Provincial Information Office, Arts, Culture, Tourism, Sports and Museum Promotions Unit and the Department of Interior and Local Government provincial office.

They will judge the participants based from the following criteria: General Cleanliness – 40%; Planting Materials (combination of ornamental plants, forest and fruit trees) – 15%; Healthy Seedlings (with tree guards) – 15%; 100% Survival Rate (planted trees and ornamental plants); Attractiveness of the landscape design – 15%; No existing structures in the lakeshore that can destruct the landscape – 5%, for a total of 100%.

Prizes at stake for the top three winners are as follows; First Prize – P30,000.00, Second Prize – P20,000.00 and Third Prize – P10,000.00, while a consolation prize of P5,000.00 will also be given to the non-winning cluster.

Manlisis further explained that reclamation of the area to be used for the contest is strictly prohibited and the 10-meter easement is to be utilized for the lakeshore beautification contest.

Tentative schedule of the contest will be from September to November this year.
