South Cotabato boosts health services with three key initiatives launched in May

Koronadal City, South Cotabato – In a significant move to strengthen healthcare delivery and promote employee well-being, the Provincial Government of South Cotabato launched three major health-related programs and facilities this May—further cementing its commitment to quality and accessible public service.

Governor Reynaldo S. Tamayo, Jr. led the series of events which marked the transfer of the Outpatient Department (OPD) to a new building, the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the establishment of a Peritoneal Dialysis Unit, and the launching of the Healthy Hospital Program for government health workers.

Modern OPD Building Now Operational

Patients seeking outpatient medical services can now experience improved facilities and faster healthcare delivery with the full transfer of the South Cotabato Provincial Hospital’s Outpatient Department to its new building.

The upgraded OPD facility features more spacious consultation rooms, better ventilation, and an improved queuing system designed to enhance patient flow and comfort. It offers general medical consultations, diagnostics, and referrals, accommodating hundreds of patients daily from across the province and neighboring areas.

“This is part of our ongoing effort to raise the standards of public healthcare. We want our constituents to feel that quality service does not have to be expensive,” Governor Tamayo said during the ceremonial opening.

MOA Signed for Peritoneal Dialysis Unit

Another milestone was reached with the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Provincial Government and partner health institutions for the establishment of a Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Unit at the provincial hospital.

This facility will cater to patients with end-stage renal disease who require ongoing dialysis treatment. Unlike hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis allows patients greater flexibility and the possibility of home-based care, making it ideal for many rural and low-income patients.

The PD Unit will not only provide treatment but also training and monitoring for patients and caregivers—empowering them to manage their health conditions more effectively.

Healthy Hospital Program for Employees

Completing the trio of health initiatives is the Healthy Hospital Program, a wellness-centered approach that promotes the physical and mental well-being of hospital employees.

From regular fitness activities and mental health support to healthy food options in the canteen, the program aims to create a safe, supportive, and health-conscious environment for all medical and non-medical personnel.

“We cannot provide quality care if our caregivers are unhealthy and overworked,” emphasized Dr. Conrado Braña, Provincial Health Officer. “This initiative ensures that those who care for our people are also being cared for.”

A Step Closer to Universal Health Care

The Provincial Government’s efforts this May represent a strong push toward Universal Health Care—where services are not only expanded but also designed to be inclusive, equitable, and sustainable.

“These programs reflect our belief that healthcare should be accessible, responsive, and compassionate. We will continue to innovate and invest in the health of every South Cotabateño,” Dr. Braña concluded.
